“Elizabeth.”

“Mmmm?”

Elizabeth reluctantly opened her eyes. The light in the cabin was grey, suggesting it was morning. She yawned and settled closer to Darcy, hardly aware she was doing it.

“What time is it?” she asked. A part of her, the part that had been raised to prioritise her reputation above all else, shrieked at her to move away from the bed and the man who held her but she found she could not. The cold was a distant memory and she had never felt so comfortable in all her life. She was also sure she had never slept so well. Besides, she was still half asleep and no one could expect her to jump awake quite so quickly.

She felt Darcy rummage before he pulled out his watch and held it up for both of them to see.

“Almost eight o’clock,” he said. He replaced the watch and wrapped his arms around her again, yawning and seemingly in no more of a hurry to move than she was. “Did you sleep?”

“I did. Very well. And you?”

“Never better.”

They lapsed into silence but it was a comfortable one, filled with contentment. Elizabeth drowsily thought she might stay all day like that, wrapped up in Darcy’s arms and she was grateful for the potential of cold that allowed her the plausible deniability to steal a few more minutes there.

Darcy absent-mindedly ran his hand up and down her arms, making her shiver. How could this — something that should have made her feel horrified — feel so natural and right? From the moment Darcy had lain beside her, it was as though they had pushed polite society to one side. As soon as they left the bed, all those rules would be waiting for them again. And Elizabeth was not prepared to allow them in just yet.

She tilted her head up to look at Darcy. She smiled.

“What?” he asked. His voice was still deep with sleep.

“I am so used to seeing you looking like a gentleman ought, exactly as your valet turned you out, that it is strange to see you with your hair tousled and this sprouting over your face.” Elizabeth reached up a finger to trace the stubble lining his jaw.

“It takes a lot of effort to make me look presentable,” said Darcy. “It does not come naturally.”

He reached up a hand to catch her exploring fingers. Elizabeth gasped as his warm hand covered hers. He looked down at her. Elizabeth was not sure who moved first but before she knew it, his lips were on hers and she was responding to him as hungrily as he did her. He rolled her onto her back, murmuring her name as his lips captured hers again and again, his big hands cradling her face between them. Elizabeth hardly knew what she was doing but she ran her hands up and down his back and up into his tousled hair, feeling as though she could not get enough of him. She could hardly breathe and her heart raced so fast she thought he must hear it.
